Households throw away food because they lose track of what they have and when it expires — then buy more, and the cycle repeats. Food Savers set out to turn the pantry into actionable, money-saving suggestions instead of a source of waste.

We built native iOS and Android apps that combine barcode scanning, expiry tracking and AI-generated recipes — with senior engineers owning the product and AI as a capability inside it.

Low-friction capture. Barcode scanning (ML Kit) gets items into the pantry without typing, so tracking is light enough to keep up day to day.

Cook what you have. The app generates personalised recipes (OpenAI) from what's actually in the pantry and what's about to expire — turning use-it-before-it-spoils into a concrete dinner.

Expiry that prompts action. Automatic expiry tracking surfaces what to use next, so food gets eaten instead of forgotten.

Meal planning for the household. Planning ties it together, cutting both waste and the shopping bill.

Stack: SwiftUI, Jetpack Compose, Firebase, the OpenAI API, ML Kit and a barcode scanner.

Users cut food waste by up to 60%, save around €150 a month, and get automatic expiry reminders plus personalised AI recipes.

The product turns a passive source of waste — the pantry — into an active, money-saving assistant: items are captured by scan, expiry is tracked automatically, and AI turns the nightly what-do-I-cook question into a recipe from what's already there. Less waste, lower bills, less effort.
