Transnational history-education platform for the Council of Europe — HistoLab

The Council of Europe's HistoLab programme — funded by the European Union and implemented by the Council of Europe — set out to bring history education across Europe into one place. History teachers and educators work in very different national systems, yet share the same needs: trustworthy teaching resources, a professional community to learn from, and practical tools for teaching difficult and contested topics.

Meeting that meant a single public platform that could hold several distinct kinds of content at once — a searchable resource hub, a media library, an events calendar, a members' network and hands-on toolkits — and present them clearly to a broad, non-technical audience. Just as importantly, the Council of Europe's own editors had to be able to run all of it themselves: publishing resources, opening events, updating tutorials and moderating the community without waiting on a development team. And because it carries the Council of Europe's name, the platform had to be dependable, accessible and consistent across every section.

We built HistoLab as a Vue.js frontend on a Directus headless CMS — a combination that separates a clean, fast public experience from a flexible editorial back office.

Directus lets the Council of Europe team model each part of HistoLab as its own structured content type and manage it from a single admin, with no developer in the loop. The Vue.js frontend consumes that content through Directus's API and renders every module in one coherent design system.

• HIST-CONNECT — a community database that connects the transnational network of history educators, so members can find and reach one another.
• Media Library & Resource Hub — the central, browsable repository of teaching resources and media, the heart of the platform.
• Calendar & Bulletin Board — community-driven event submissions and scheduling, so the network's activity stays visible in one place.
• Tutorials — structured training materials on real classroom challenges, from using videogames as a teaching tool to approaching regional conflicts.
• Toolkit — "Debunking Fake News and Fostering Critical Thinking", built around historical source analysis and media literacy.

Because every content type lives in Directus, editors add a resource, open an event or publish a tutorial directly, and it appears on the site immediately — the same workflow whether they are updating the media library or moderating HIST-CONNECT.

HistoLab is live at histolab.coe.int, serving history educators across the Council of Europe. It brings what used to be scattered — resources, a professional community, events and training — into one dependable home, "the world of history education at your fingertips."

The Council of Europe team owns the platform day to day: they publish and update every resource, event and tutorial themselves through Directus, with no developer in the loop, while the Vue.js frontend keeps the public experience fast and consistent across every module. The result is a platform that can keep growing with the programme — new content types and sections can be added on the same foundation.
